Environmental Conservation & Climate

Climate change is increasing environmental risks such as flooding, water pollution, habitat loss, and pressure on infrastructure. Watersheds, rivers, and coastal systems are closely connected, meaning changes in one area can affect entire regions. As these challenges grow, communities face increasing strain on both their environment and local economies. Through research, policy analysis, and regional collaboration, NEMWI works to develop solutions that strengthen ecosystems, support sustainable infrastructure, and help communities adapt to changing environmental conditions.

NEMWI seeks to strengthen environmental resilience and address the impacts of climate change across the Northeast-Midwest region. In the Great Lakes, many of the impacts of climate change will be acutely felt. At the same time, because of its moderate climate and abundant freshwater resources, many experts project that the region could see population growth as Americans immigrate from more exposed places. The Institute’s experience in water systems, infrastructure, and ecosystem management positions it to address these novel challenges and assist policymakers in charting a course through them.
