The Northeast-Midwest Institute will hold a virtual briefing on Friday, December 13th, from 2:00-3:00 p.m. EST on invasive carp management in the Mississippi River Basin and how that management benefits the Great Lakes.
The introduction of invasive carp to the Great Lakes would greatly endanger the $7 billion fishery that helps fuel the region’s economy. These invasive species pose a significant threat to existing native fish populations, while also creating a safety risk to recreational boating and other Great Lakes activities and industries, and thus would have a devastating impact on the region.
One of the ways to protect the Great Lakes from invasive carp is through management actions in the Mississippi River basin, including contract fishing, intensive monitoring, deterent technologies. These actions and others reduce the number of carp that make it to the upper Illinois Waterway and threaten the Great Lakes.
Panelists will include:
- Amy McGovern, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service;
- Ben Batten, Mississippi River Interstate Cooperative Resource Association;
- Brian Schoenung, Illinois Department of Natural Resources;
- Mike Weimer, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Invasive Carp Regional Coordinating Committee co-chair;
- Teresa Seidel, Environmental Protection Agency, Invasive Carp Regional Coordinating Committee co-chair; and
- Jeff Zuercher, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
