A Natural Resources Defense Council expert post from May 2018 discussed nitrate pollution in Illinois and its effects on certain drinking water systems within the state. The author, Ellen Lee, cited the Northeast-Midwest Institute’s report, Source Water Quality and the Cost of Nitrate Treatment in the Mississippi River Basin, to emphasize the problem of nitrate pollution in Vermillion County despite the fact that it has received fewer drinking water violations. Specifically, Lee wrote, “[i]n the past five years, Vermillion County’s drinking water violations have decreased, but a recent study by the Northeast-Midwest Institute reveals that Vermillion County’s source water still experiences seasonal high nitrate concentrations.”
