1The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not release seasonally adjusted establishment data for ten states (AL, AK, DE, GA, HI, NV, OK, SC, TN, WY) and the District of Columbia because the seasonal component, which is small relative to the trend-cycle and irregular components, cannot be separated with sufficient precision. U.S. levels taken from national employment statistics rather than from sums of state data. The Bureau of Labor Statistics rounds national employment data to thousands. |
|
NOTE: |
Seasonally adjusted data on manufacturing employment is available for 40 states. The data show that manufacturing jobs fell in 39 of those states from the most recent manufacturing employment peak in March 1998 through to the low point in January 2004. North Dakota was the exception. Northeastern and midwestern states accounted for seven of the ten states with the steepest percentage declines in manufacturing employment over the period: New Hampshire (3rd worst), New York (4th), Massachusetts (5th), Maine (6th), Rhode Island (7th), Illinois (9th), and Connecticut (10th). From March 1998 to January 2004, 16 of the 40 states experienced percentage declines in manufacturing employment that exceeded the percentage drop in manufacturing employment nationwide (-18.8 percent), including 11 states in the Northeast-Midwest region. Among the Northeast-Midwest states for which data are available, manufacturing employment rose in eight states and declined in nine from January to May 2004. Manufacturing employment increased 0.6 percent nationwide from January to May 2004. |
