Matt Kane
is a senior policy analyst with expertise in economic development,
regional economic analysis, and the flow of federal funds.
Prior to rejoining the Northeast-Midwest staff in 2000, he
had worked for the Institute in the early 1990s as an analyst
on labor force issues and as the staff economist tracking
regional economic and demographic trends. Kane also has worked
as an economic development specialist for the National League
of Cities; an adjunct lecturer for the Urban Planning Department
at the University of Michigan; and the research director for
the Modernization Forum, a national association for manufacturing
extension centers.
He is
the author or principal author of Federal
Policy Ideas for Community Revitalization: Suggestions from
Congressionally Hosted Roundtable Discussions of Federal Policies for
Older Cities and Close-In Suburbs, Public Sector Economic
Development: Concepts and Approaches, The Northeast-
Midwest
Guide to Federal Formula Grant Programs, The State of the
Region: Demographic and Economic Trends in the Northeast and
Midwest, Dislocated Workers: Coping with Competition and Conversion,
and Economic Development: What Works at the Local Level. He
serves on the editorial board of Economic Development Quarterly.
Kane has twice testified before Congress on economic development
and labor force issues. He has written many reports and articles
on federal spending patterns, economic development, regional
economic circumstances, labor issues, and manufacturing extension.
He holds a master’s degree from the Humphrey Institute
of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota and a bachelor’s
degree from the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota.
