NEMWI Releases Note to the Coalitions on Property and Natural Gas
During the last few years, the Northeast and Midwest region has experienced a veritable energy boom.  As natural gas producers blanket the area with plans to secure acres of prime leases above the lucrative Marcellus and Utica Shale plays, concerns have arisen regarding tactics and methods of leasing.  Landowners, communities and policy makers are now facing the question of property rights in this contemporary context--and are searching for the best way to move forward with this growth in industrial activity.  This Note to the Coalitions, "The Landman Cometh:  Property Questions within the Northeast-Midwest Natural Gas Debate," summarizes the story of today's on-the-ground leasing experiences, state roles in property rights negotiations, and concepts for managing the issue.
