SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Named for a section of the Small
Business Act, the Small Business Administration (SBA) 8(a) Business
Development Program was created to help small, disadvantaged businesses
compete in the American economy. SBA also offers a variety of other
financing options for small businesses, usually in the form of loan
guarantees. Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) partners
with SBA in aiding the formation, growth, and success of small businesses.
With more than 11,000 volunteer business counselors, SCORE offers
mentoring and advice on the full range of business topics. Farmers'
markets routinely turn up on the award lists for the 7(a) loan guarantee
and other SBA programs.
